Within the region of Tuscany itself, are more precise and smaller regions. Val d’Orcia is one of these; the landscapes of which are famous throughout the world as being depicted in an array of Renaissance paintings.
Mapped from the southern hills of Siena all the way to Monte Amiata, the area is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its sheer beauty is a testament to this prestigious trademark. Smaller towns such as Pienza, Castiglion d’Orcia – with its picturesque views and fortress, and Abbey of Sant’ Antimo – are located within this region and are shining examples of this.
Hills, greenery for as far as the eye can see, vineyards, and an overarching sense of tranquillity are significant traits of the area.
Whilst not forgetting that this is Italy: the food in this area is local, and incredible. Try the famous wine in Pienza called the Brunello di Montalcino, and the Pecorino – wine made from sheep’s milk.
As with most places in Tuscany, the experience can be a little too much. Take a dip in one of the local thermal baths: Bagni di San Filippo, or Bagno Vignoni.
Once you’re done, dry yourself off. Start exploring once more.
